Roona Begum after surgery
Roona Begun was born in a remote
village on north-eastern India to a family of Rehman. Soon after she was born,
she was diagnosed with an extreme form of hydrocephalus. The head grew to a
circumference of 94 centimetres; almost triple the size of a normal baby.According to Roona’s father, Abdul
Rehman, her head started growing bigger
day-by-day, she lost appetite for food and it became very difficult for her to
be carried anywhere. There were ten liters of excess fluid inside her brain.
Her head was so heavy she could barely move. The skin of her head has
stretched so far that it pulled her eyelids over her eyes, making it impossible
for Roona to see.Her mother, Fatima explains that She
had such a big head, it was scary for people to see her.Roona parents couldn't afford to treat her. Her father,
who works at a brick kiln, earns less than $3... in a day. With the intervention of
Norwegian students, Natalie Krantz and Jonas Borchgrevink, who were moved with
compassion for her put her photo on a crowd funding website, are hoping to
raise $1,600 to cover her shunt surgery at Fortis Hospital in New Delhi. They
were able to raise more than a sum of $60,000 by August 2013 and have transferred
half of this amount to the hospital to commence the operation. At the hospital, the neurosurgeon,
Vaishya, initially, wasn't hopeful about the surgery. He says the surgery posed a huge
risk to her life, and at one point they almost lost her.Much to the relief of her parents
and her doctors, Roona has pulled through. After five surgeries, Roona's
head is now down to a circumference of 58 centimeters, still larger than the
average 38 to 48 centimeters, but small enough to allow her to live a
reasonably normal life.
